Ways to Develop Reading Habits among School Children

In order to achieve educational objectives and develop skills among children, school library acts as a stepping stone which helps to develop creative thinking among young readers. Keeping this in mind, there is a need to promote reading as a skill and develop new sense of understanding among the mind of our future nation builders.

A school library acts as a life-long learning facility where creative ideas are shared and students joyfully spend their time browsing through collection of books and other reading material. For this, a diversified collection in School Library is must, not only of printed material but should also include audio visual aids, maps, charts, posters to satisfy varied needs of its readers. It should act as a Learning Centre where students learn to approach Library resources for information search to keep a balance between classroom teaching and their level of understanding.

Following efforts can be made to develop effective reading skills:
Students need to be made aware of variety of sources available in library and how they can be used
  • Diversified choice of books& languages for reading need to be made available to meet different reading requirements
  • Encouragement to visit Library during Lunch break, arrangement period to browse through its collection
  • Display of colourful Encyclopedia, AmazingFacts about environment / Human body / Animals to arouse their interest
  • Writing book reviews for newly arrived books will also help boost writing skills among students in addition to main objective
  • Round Table discussion of a book read by a group of students can help develop their skills for conduction Group discussion sessions
  • Introduce students with new books available on science & technology, inventions & discoveries to keep them abreast in this information era
  • Regular visits to book fairs/ exhibitions can be of utmost aid
  • Book exchange drive among students to share titles read by them with their counterparts can help to share their understanding of topic in an effective way
  • One Nation Reading Together should be celebrated every year wilfully by both students and staff members
  • Regularly organising Quests involving reading followed by rewards and recognition
These initiatives if taken on regular intervals will not only increase the footfall of students in Library during their free / interval period but will also generate a curiosity among them as to what next event is  about to be organised so that they can be well prepared in advance to ensure their maximum participation. Creative minds of youngsters if poked can help them develop their skills and unfold their true potential.
